#1 – What is the atmosphere of the community?
Getting information about a senior living community over the phone is a great place to start.
However, taking the time to tour a community is the best way to see for yourself what the atmosphere is like.
Before you visit, ask yourself…
- What kind of environment do I want my parent living in?
- Does the community look old and outdated/or modern and classy?
- Are the residents active and able, or do most residents sit in their rooms?
Then be sure that the community you visit jives with your desired atmosphere.
#2 – How does the community help residents overcome health challenges and/or stay on top of preventative care?
When it comes to your loved one’s physical well-being, there are two important goals: help Mom or Dad address any health challenges…and prevent future ones.
From arthritis to high-blood pressure, it’s common for seniors to struggle with health challenges. And you’ll need to make sure Dad can get the care he needs…even if he can’t drive.
Not to mention, it doesn’t matter how vibrant Mom is. To help her maintain independence, she might need preventative care, such as daily checks or physical therapy.
This is why it’s so important to understand how each community you visit is equipped to help residents overcome health challenges and optimize their health and well-being with preventative care services.
A few key services that you’ll want to make sure your loved one has access to include…
- 24/7 professional medical care.
- Occupational therapy.
- Speech therapy.
- Physical therapy.
- Skilled nursing care.

#3 – What dining options does the community provide?
It seems crazy that there are communities that don’t provide adequate nutrition for their residents.
But sadly, there are many places that…
- Don’t offer residents access to 3 meals per day.
- Charge extra for residents to eat 3 meals a day.
- Don’t provide fresh, healthy foods for residents to choose from.
Always be sure to ask the community what their dining plan options are.
For instance, in some communities, the dining plans are included in the monthly cost of living.
This allows residents to have the freedom to take advantage of nutritious menu options every day without having to worry about the costs associated with eating. This is an important thing to look out for!
It’s also a good idea to check out the menu of a community before agreeing to move a loved one there.
Make sure to ask if the community offers a variety of different menu options. Even more important, ensure that the community has the ability to cater to residents who have special dietary needs due to food sensitivities or chronic diseases like diabetes.
#4 – What type of social activities/events are available?
Having opportunities to engage in social events and enjoy hobbies and activities is the key to enjoying retirement to its fullest.
Therefore, it makes sense that getting an idea of what type of activities/events are available in a community is vital before having a loved one move in.

#5 – What is the community’s mission/philosophy of care?
Last, but certainly not least, we think it’s very important to ask about a community’s philosophy of care.
One way you can do this is by asking about a community’s mission.

- Doesn’t have a clearly defined mission/philosophy of care
- Has a mission/philosophy of care that isn’t resident focused
…this is a good sign that you should stay away from that community.
