Start with how the staff are trained.
Anyone can claim their team is caring, but it’s important to know what training supports that. Ask how caregivers are trained for dementia care, how long the training lasts, and how often it is updated.
Take it a step further and ask how staff learn to handle distress, frustration, or agitation. These moments are part of dementia, and the community’s answer will reveal a lot about their approach.
Ask about safety and freedom to move
One of the main reasons families consider memory care is safety. Wandering can be dangerous for those with dementia, so ask how the community prevents it. Check for secure entrances and exits, enclosed courtyards, and easy-to-follow hallways.
Also ask how the community keeps residents safe without making it feel restrictive. The best places protect people but still let them walk around and safely spend time outdoors.
Ask what a typical day looks like.
Ask for a recent activity calendar, and if possible, visit during a meal or activity instead of just hearing about them. Find out how the community learns about new residents, including their work, hobbies, and favorite music. You may hear about person-centered care often. A good community will show you what this means, from how meals are served to how staff interact with someone having a quiet or tough day.
Dementia changes over time, so the care that works now might not work later. Ask what happens as your loved one’s needs grow. Can they stay in the same community? How are care plans updated, and who is involved in those decisions? Knowing this now can help your family avoid a stressful move later.
Ask how you will stay involved.
You are still an important part of your loved one’s life. A good community treats you as a partner and keeps you involved in their care. Ask how the team stays in touch with families, whether by phone, care meetings, a family portal, or regular updates. Also ask what support is available for caregivers, like education or support groups. The right community will make it easy for you to stay involved.
Observe the community and resident interactions.
Often, the most valuable information you get during a tour comes from what you see. Watch how the staff talk to residents. Do they make eye contact, explain what they are doing, and give residents time to respond? The tone of voice, patience, and body language you notice can tell you as much about the quality of care as any written policy. Trust your own observations and how the visit feels to you.
Give yourself room to decide.
It’s okay if you don’t get all your questions answered in one tour. Visit several communities, take notes while your thoughts are fresh, and return for another visit if you need to. You want to find a place where your loved one feels safe, included, and truly understood.
